Students of class XI and XII, who want to opt for a ‘different’ subject at school, can do so now. Starting academic year 2014-15, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to introduce Library and Information Science’ as a new elective at senior secondary level on a pilot basis in selected schools.

Students will be able to take the up subject as one of the four electives or as an additional elective at senior secondary stage in combination with any of the subjects under the Scheme of Studies of the Board.

“CBSE has decided to introduce a Library & Information Science Course at senior secondary level, which will fulfil the requirement of developing necessary skills in learners to identify, locate, evaluate and use the required information efficiently,” Dr Sadhana Parashar, director, CBSE, Academics, said.

The level of knowledge offered would be equivalent to diploma level. The course will be divided into fixed periods, with theory (80 marks) and practical sessions (20 marks), the Board said in a statement.

Principal,BVM, Civil Lines, Anju Bhutani, while speaking to Nagpur Today said, CBSE students generally go BA, BSc and other courses, introduction of ‘Library and Information Science’ will attempt to attract students towards Vocational courses.  With so many colleges and schools opening up, library science course is a must as it will open up new career opportunity and will enable students to get jobs.

The course will include lessons on sectors such as library information society, library resources, reference and information resources, library computer application and library management. The statement said the course was essential because of its relevance and needed among students, teachers, professionals and researchers.

Principal, Centre Point School, Sumati Venugopalan, said we would like to tap this opportunity. If there is demand for this course we don’t mind starting it but there are not ample students and teachers available for this course.

Emphasising on the need for such a subject, the Board added, “One important aspect of this elective is to improve the education system for Library and Information Science at school level. The objectives of the course are to develop a basic understanding about the subject and develop knowledge and skill for students to be able to pursue the subject for higher education.”

With tension writ large on the faces, parents accompanying their children with worry, almost in all the centres in the city Nagpur Today witnessed the same scenario. This is a period which induces tension in the student since the results will decide which career will be taken up or what are the options available. Sleeplessness, last minute revisions and fever and other ill-health are often found among the students.

The first exam to be conducted by Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education was Marathi held on February 20, 2014. Nagpur Today: The English paper of HSC examination conducted by Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education on the second of the HSC examination had a poser in one of the questions giving hard time to some of the students appearing for this paper.

In one of the questions it read as follows:

B) Grammar (Do as directed)

i) _________my friend is _____ able translator and _____ impartial editor as well.

(Rewrite using appropriate articles)

This question carried 1 mark. The students attempting this question felt that there can be no article which can be filled in the first blank space. If so is it a misprint or a poser?

However, Nagpur Today spoke to some English teachers, who opined that there is a mention of this type of question called Omission of articles, where the student is supposed to mark a dash or — and attempt the remaining part of the question.

The teacher also opined that since the question carried only 1 mark, how can one mark be divided into three answers for three blank spaces? For the rightfully two blanks the marks can be divided into 0.5 + 0.5= 1. Therefore, the question is a poser to test if the student understands the concept of omission of article. Therefore, the question is neither wrong nor a misprint.

Less number of copying reported due to lack of staff in flying squads

The English paper of HSC on Friday saw only 20 cases of copying by students in Nagpur Division. The English paper is often considered to be tough, especially by students from schools in rural areas.   Usually many cases of copying are found in the rural areas. However, due to lack of enough staff to man the flying Squads reaching to the far flung areas only 20 cases of copying were registered or reported.

This year, the Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education has assigned about 70 flying squads to ensure copying is not carried out in the Nagpur Division. Since the start of the exam, the preparations were looking weak. Even the Chairman of the Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education is said not to be on regular rolls. The Chairman of Amravati Board has been given additional responsibility to look after the Nagpur Division.

According to sources, in the rural areas, copying was carried on in many places. The number of copying cases reported at Nagpur is 8, Gondia-9, Gadchiroli- 5, Chandrapur-5, Bhandara-4 and in Wardha-2.

SSC Student waiting to receive their admission cards

February 23 and Feb 27 is said to be holidays for the staff of Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education. The schools have to send the practical examination marks before Feb 28. But they still don’t have the list of the examination roll numbers of the students.

The students must get their admission cards by February 24, because again on March 1 is Saturday followed by Sunday. The examinations are starting from March 3. The Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education has to see that the students get their admission cards on time. The parents have appealed to the Board to expedite the process to avoid last moment running around for the students.

Uncertainties galore on board paper valuation and moderation

Shikshak Kruti Samiti's delegation met District Collector Abhishek Krishna and told about the boycott of valuation of SSC board exam

Shikshak Kruti Samiti’s delegation met District Collector Abhishek Krishna and told about the boycott of valuation of SSC board exam

Nagpur News.

The X and XII board examinations will be held on schedule but it is difficult to say anything about valuation, moderation and date of result. Nagpur District Headmasters, Teachers and Non-teaching staff Union Action Committee has in principle sought co-operation from 14 of their unions having 26,000 members who have opposed board paper valuation and moderation work. The union leaders have sent a letter to this effect through collector.  Before this also VIJUCTA and other organisations had expressed such opposition.

The reason why things have come to such a pass is that for last two months the teaches have not been paid their salaries.

Their salaries were arranged through Nagpur District Central Co-operative Bank which is in doldrums. The Reserve Bank has not continued recognition to this bank. There is no core banking facility in this bank. Taking into consideration all such things the salaries should have been paid through some nationalised bank.

The teachers have demanded that all its 26,000 members should get their salaries online. They have also demanded other banking facilities. They have demanded that like the teachers in Mumbai, they should also get their salaries through nationalised bank.

It a fact that CM had prescribed a time limit for providing online salaries but though the time limit for this has passed the Central Co-operative Bank has not extended any of the promised facilities to the teachers. The prominent teacher leaders who participated in the campaign were Sapan Nehrotra, Sanjay Khedikar, Kishor Warbhe, Rajabhau Durukar and others.

Prior to this also the teachers had taken out protest procession, sit in demos, hunger strike etc. But the government has failed to pay any heed to their demands. N G Ganar is the chief co-ordinator of the action  committee. He is getting full support from other leaders like, Pramod Rewatkar, Purushottam Panchbhai, Khemraj Konde, Sapan Nehrotra, Vitthal Junghare, Siddharth Onkar and others.

Engineering examination fees of RTMNU leave pockets & hearts of students, parents burning

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

The nagging problem of exorbitant examination fees of RTMNU has been putting the engineering students of the region in the dock every year. The students hit the streets on umpteen times demanding reduction in the examination fees but the RTMNU Administration failed to meet the students’ demand and provide justice to them.

rtmnuNagpur News.

Every examination is a stepping stone for students in order to climb the ladder of success in their future quest. But for engineering students of Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), the examination, notwithstanding the importance, dents the pockets of them and their parents deeply. And it happens every semester.

The nagging problem of exorbitant examination fees of RTMNU has been putting the engineering students of the region in the dock every year. The students hit the streets on umpteen times demanding reduction in the examination fees but the RTMNU Administration failed to meet the students’ demand and provide justice to them. The pockets and hearts burn when the students and parents scan the examination fee structure of other Universities in Maharashtra.

The examination fees (per semester) of engineering course of RTMNU are far higher than other universities of  Maharashtra.  A comparison would show a huge difference, of course, on higher side. Other universities are charging Rs 500-1400 per semester whereas Nagpur University charges Rs 2200-2500 per semester.

In Vidarbha, RTMNU and Sant Gadgebaba Amravati University have engineering affiliated courses. Here also, the examination fees of the both universities, if compared, will show RTMNU charging very high fees. Amravati University charges Rs 1200-1400 examination fees annually. On the other hand, Nagpur University, for the same course, charges around Rs 4300-5000 per year.

The students in the past during their agitations against the RTMNU have raised this issue with the authorities. The RTNMU higher ups had assured the students of  looking into the matter and provide relief. But nothing has been done on this issue so far.

A large number of students, time and again, have been requesting Nagpur Today highlight this issue. And Nagpur Today, too, honoured their requests by flashing many reports in this regard.  Students feel that so much of examination fees is backbreaking burden to them.

Speaking to Nagpur  Today,  Ritesh Ambadkar said, “So much of examination fees. We don’t know where money is being utilized.”

Another engineering student, Abhishek Ingolikar, said, “I have only one subject back in 3rd and 4th semester, but only for one subject, we have to pay full examination fees of Rs 2200. Our parents get frustrated  due to this heavy  fees structure.”

Suraj Mankar  said, “Students are being systematically discouraged, especially the ones who cannot afford it.  Students coming from financially weaker backgrounds face tremendous pressure.”

Shreyaans Bagde, lamenting the RTMNU attitude, said “Why this injustice is being meted out to us is beyond our imagination. When all other universities including Mumbai and Pune, have been charging far less examination fees, why the RTMNU is showing it is different.”

The following table shows the comparative figures of examination fees charged by various universities across the country:

A teaching technique proving a veritable boon for students and teachers alike the best way

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

mohotaNagpur News.

Creative Educators, a charitable professional service organization of Nagpur, has taken up the arduous task of improving the quality of education. Towards this objective, it has been propagating 21st Century Teaching Technique, invented by Dr. R.D. Mohota, after 62 years of intense deliberative research. This technique is the only one of its kind in the world. It fully develops the hidden talents of students viz. comprehension, reasoning , logic, self-control and similar qualities. In a way, it makes the intelligence of students to blossom and creates a well-rounded personality as a whole.

Co-founder of “21st Century  Teaching Technique” Squadron Leader (Retd) Pravin Bhatia informed that students learn the syllabus mostly through interaction, and very little through lectures. This makes for self motivated students who are well trained in various soft skills which are vital for success of every individual in all walks of life. He further added, incidentally, it is lack of such skills that account for many of the brilliant students failing in the world of work. Thus, a veritable crop of competent manpower can be created if this technique is adopted.

Actually, under conventional teaching, a teacher addresses the whole class. But the Creative Educators technique involves in the 1st step division of subject matter into groups of six students each, 2nd step- each group reads silently the portion allotted to them, 3rd step- each group then discusses the same and understands it in consultation with the teacher, 4th step –each group then in turn, presents its portion to the whole class, Step- 5, all the students in the class will ask questions to the group after reading the relevant portion. Teacher helps when necessary.

90% of the subject matter is grasped and absorbed by the students fairly well through this technique. Balance must be taken care of by teachers in rest of the time available.

This Technique is the brainchild of R.D Mohota, Founder of  21st Century Teaching Technique,  invented after 62 years of intensive Education research. Mohota believes in drawing out knowledge from the minds and not just feeding knowledge into the mind.

This technique was demonstrated successfully in around 400 schools of Nagpur and to over lakhs of students all over India. The Maharashtra Government has included this Technique in the proposed manual for teachers. It has been recently introduced in all schools of Nashik district as well.

It is a charitable initiative of the founders of this technique. Schools interested to know about it can contact Squadron Leader (Retd) Pravin Bhatia on his cell no- 9552457521.

Mukul Wasnik and a group of MLAs from Vidarbha met the Governor on the issue.

NU1113Nagpur News : Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan has asked the Vice Chancellor Vilas Sapkal to prepare a scheme to ensure that the academic interests of students would be protected and to submit such proposal for the consideration of the High Court. The matter is already sub-judice.

The former Union Minister Mukul Wasnaik and some Vidarbha MLAs Chainsukh Sancheti, Namdeo Usendi and Ramratanbapu Raut had met the Governor at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on Wednesday to discuss the issue of students of the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University.

In a press release, Raj Bhavan said, “The delegation expressed concern over the fate of students from the Nagpur University who had taken admission to Colleges that have been blacklisted by the University and now face the prospect of denial of permission to take examinations. The delegation sought the Governor’s intervention in permitting students to appear for the examinations conducted by the university.”

Over 250 colleges were blacklisted by the varsity before the beginning of the academic year 2013-14 over alleged malpractices in the appointment of under-qualified teachers and in exams. Hundreds of students were enrolled in different years at that time whose future is in dark since then.

The controversy rose to national level couple of months back forcing the President Pranab Mukherjee to cancel his program to attend the convocation ceremony of the Nagpur University. The convocation ceremony was also deferred following that.

Minister Rajesh Tope told the Governor that most of the Colleges blacklisted by the Nagpur University were not actually functioning. He urged the MLAs to cooperate with the University authorities in finding an amicable solution to the problem.

The Governor asked the Minister for Higher Education to deal with the larger issue of appointment of under-qualified teachers by Colleges and the resultant impact on the quality of higher education in the State.

Problems crop up in State Board Exam, answer sheets go without bar code, stickers, problems of admit cards a big headache

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur News.

The State Board Examination (X) is having numerous problems but there is no solution in the sight. Though the examination is fast approaching the concerned teachers are yet to get bar codes, stickers etc. The admission cards problem has left the students, examinees  and the concerned schools in jeopardy.

As per information received there are many mistakes of photo, names, signature, subjects etc in the printed admit cards. The divisional board has asked the schools to conduct re-examination. The school administration is saying that it is for the first time that so many mistakes have come to light. When the students should concentrate on their studies they are making rounds of the school and we are rushing to the board office every now and then say school administrations.

The informed sources have disclosed that this year the contract of preparing admit cards is given to some new company. The company staff was not aware of the working of the board. There were problems in forms scanning. Thereafter all the data got corrupted, which caused great problems at the eleventh hour. There were efforts to correct the mistakes in the admit cards but due to the rush more and more mistakes crept in.

So the obvious thing happened, instead of roll numbers the students were required to write their names on the answer sheets at the time of practical examinations. The X standard practical exams will continue till February 28. Thereafter from March 3 to 27 the written exam is scheduled to be held.

The problems at the XII board exam are also well known now. That the students received their admit cards on February 5 when the actual exam started on February 6 that is only a day before they could get their hall tickets.

But despite all this, the secretary of the board, Anil Pardhi has claimed that the admit cards will be issued prior to examination and all the required instructions have been given to the concerned people.

Nagpur News.

The Class X students, already hassled and harassed by the I-Cards having several discrepancies, are now being forced to cough up Rs 200 for receiving them. Some school administrations have been found recovering Rs 200 from Class X students for distributing I-cards to them. The issue has drawn the attention of the police.

According to reports, Old Mangalwari-based Hindusthan Vidyalaya was on Friday found recovering Rs 200 for I-Cards. Moreover, the students were not being issued receipts of Rs 200 taken from them. However, the School Administration termed it as charges for Test Series and not for I-cards.

Social worker Rahul Baburao Morey informed that he received a phone call from a student on Friday  afternoon. The student told him that the Old Mangalwari-based Hindusthan Vidyalaya was charging Class X students with Rs 200 towards I-Cards. Morey went to the School to check for himself the truth. He noticed 40 students in line to receive the I-Cards. When Morey talked to students, he was informed that School Administration was recovering Rs 200 for issuing the I-Cards. And no receipt was being issued to the students. Police were informed about the same who rushed to the school.

SCHOOL RULE:

When Morey approached the Headmaster of the School, S S Pathak, and enquired about the recovery of Rs 200 from the students, he said that it is a school rule. Pathak clearly told Morey that the school takes money from students for issuing I-cards. No separate receipt is issued to students. The school has already distributed the I-Cards to students, Pathak said. According to sources, the rivalry between teachers and Administration brought the issue in the limelight. The teachers themselves exposed the Administration in this connection.

On the other hand, Lakadganj Police Inspector Satyanarayan Jaiswal  said the police have received a complaint against the Hindusthan Vidyalaya Administration. The course of action will be decided after police receive a letter from Education Department, the PI Jaiswal said.

The Headmaster of the School S S Pathak, however, said that the School is not taking money for I-Cards but for the Test Series. The Education Officer Satish Mendhe said, “The recovery of Rs 200 even for the Test Series is unfortunate and is totally wrong.”

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

A meeting of Vidvat Parishad has been convened on March 4 in accordance with the directives of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court specifically to discuss the crucial issue. Members have clearly drawn the battle lines over the issue of 250 blacklisted colleges and have geared up to take the nagging issue to its logical end.

SapkalNagpur News.

The members of Vidvat Parishad (Academic Council) of RTMNU have clearly drawn the battle lines over the issue of 250 blacklisted colleges and have geared up to take the nagging issue to its logical end. According to members, they will bay for Vice Chancellor Dr Vikas Sapkal’s blood (demand resignation) if he fails to comply with the decision of Vidvat Parishad on the pressing issue of 250 colleges. A meeting of Parishad has been convened on March 4 in accordance with the directives of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court specifically to discuss the crucial issue.

REPORT TO BE MADE:

It may be recalled, the Vidvat Parishad, in its meeting held on January 19, 2014, had conveyed it decision on the 250 blacklisted colleges to Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU). According to the decision, the members had given their recognition to appointment of a regular teacher and other contributory teachers in the 250 colleges. A report too was submitted to the High Court in this regard. The members through the report had informed the Court that no problem exists in the 250 colleges. On the contrary, 160 colleges are being run fraudulently for the past four years. The High Court, after receiving the report of Vidvat Parishad, had asked RTMNU how many colleges have been banned for First Year admissions, what action has been taken by the University, how many regular teachers have been appointed by these colleges and when, the number of students admitted by these colleges etc etc. Previously, the RTMNU authorities had rejected the Vidvat Parishad’s decision in this connection.

STUDENTS’ INTEREST:

The RTMNU came under intense attack of Dr Babanrao Taywade for adopting double standards on the issue of students’ interest. “On one hand, the University officials have been raising questions over integrity of the Authority in the name of protecting students’ interests, and on the other hand, not implementing the decision of the Authority taken in the interest of students. The meetings of Vidvat Parishad have so far arrived at decisions regarding rules made for appointment of Post-Graduate teachers, Jumping Issue, blacklisted 250 colleges, issue of BEd colleges etc. But the RTMNU has shown careless attitude in implementing the vital decisions and has not taken a single concrete step in this connection,” Dr Taywade lamented.
